The Toronto Real Estate Board has now split Riverdale into two distinct districts. North Riverdale and South Riverdale with Gerard Street East separating the two. Riverdale has long been recognized as the gateway to Toronto's east end neighbourhoods, with its large and diverse community and colourful shopping districts.

North Riverdale from Gerrard to the Danforth is very popular with young affluent professionals, while South Riverdale has traditionally attracted a wide mix of people looking for affordable homes close to downtown.

Most of the two and three storey Victorian homes that populate the area were built largely between 1880 and 1924.

North Riverdale offers some of the area's best shopping which stretches along Danforth Avenue east of Broadview. As the heart of Toronto's Greek community, the area features many first class Greek restaurants, shops and services.

Just a hop south, down Boradview Avenue at Gerard is a bustling, busy, Chinese shopping area featuring bakeries, grocery stands, and restaurants.

The area is also rich in parkland and poplular with young families looking for something close to the downtown core with a more suburban feel.
